Name: Kirei Kotomine
Door: Right
Canon: Fate/
Canon Point: Fate/stay night, Heaven's Feel route; the end of the first movie, "I. presage flower"
Age: 38 (although he likely appears a little older than that)
Appearance:
xHistory:
x,
xPersonality:
Β» Β» Β» super pro-life
- Kirei states that one of his sworn duties as a priest is to bless anyone (or
anything) trying to be born into the world.
- As expected, this covers baptisms of infants.
- He believes it also covers allowing an existence that will destroy the entire world as soon as it's born to come into beingβsimply because it is something unborn, struggling to be born.
- With people who anticipate an upcoming end to their own lives (through the actions of others and even, presumably, suicide), Kirei is likely to interfere, to the extent of his ability, to keep said people alive or at least still fighting. Part of this is due to his sadomasochistic tendencies, but he also genuinely gives other characters in
Fate/ things to think about and possible options to take.
- In a general sense, this means serving as a supervisor in the Holy Grail Warsβhe opens the church doors to participants who need protection, heals innocent citizens, and is responsible for organizing clean-up after large disasters in the city.
- It also includes Kirei's interactions with people on the individual level. In
Fate/Grand Order, he helps a certain magus escape his capture by the player character's group. The magus mentions he'll die soon no matter whatβhe'll either be killed by the player character or by his previous allies. Kirei decides to keep him alive, so that he will continue to struggle until the very bitter end (and not waste the precious gift of life, of course).
- It's worth noting that this trait, like most things about Kirei, tends to be applied according to his own whims. He'll murder people, if it suits his circumstances or gives him happiness (more on that below). Again, he chooses an enormous doomsday baby over millions of living people. But overall, Kirei sees his dedication to blessing and preserving life as a key part of himself, and it ties into the objectively "good" things he does.
Β« Β« Β« irredeemable
- Kirei is unique in that he cannot be redeemed, in virtually any conceivable way. He isn't like Dark Heart in the Care Bears movie.
- This is because of the main defect in Kirei's character. There is something wrong with him. Whatever it is, he's been dysfunctional since birth and no healthy upbringing or life events have done anything to change it. Essentially, Kirei doesn't have the same preferences as "normal" humans. What most people think is abhorrent or ugly, he finds beautiful. While typically joyful things make most people happyβnice weather, a child's laughter, eating cakeβonly misery and devastation make Kirei happy.
- This trait also encapsulates the religious side of his life for Kireiβhe was born profoundly flawed, a defective mistake as far as God's standards for humans go, and up to this point in his life, he has never been "saved". It isn't for want of trying. When he was younger, Kirei did just about everything to help himself: pilgrimages, punishment, studying scripture and becoming a priest. None of it worked.
- Because of his religious background, Kirei has a deeply instilled sense of morality as well; this is right and wrong in the classic meaning of the words, what God's rules state is okay and what's not. Obviously, he understood from early on that he was inherently "wrong" and "bad". It's become clear to him that there's no changing that no matter what he doesβso now that he's older, he knows he's incapable of being redeemed because he's just bad.
- Kirei has tried just about everything to fix himself and become normal. This includes marrying, having a child, dressing in different fashions, tasting every food available, traveling, etc. Nothing worked. He has a treasure trove of experience proving he's beyond help.
- In many cases, the things Kirei did in the fourth Holy Grail War of
Fate/Zero and what he's done up to the fifth War in
Fate/stay night are downright hideous, cruel, and obscene, marking him as someone irredeemable. For just one example, he keeps the decaying bodies of still-alive orphans (yep, children) locked in the basement of his church, so that their life energy can sustain his Servant. There's also the matter of making Rin Tohsaka (his charge... after he murdered her father) positively miserable until he decides to kill her for his own ends in
Unlimited Blade Works.
- Even Kirei's
own psyche plays him. As is proven several times throughout the course of
Fate/Zero, he can try all he want to tamp down on his irredeemable-ness. His unsightly urges still bubble up, sometimes in ways that take him a little while to notice; they can be truly unconscious for him.
- It's also worth noting that in the
Fate/ universe, Kirei's death is quantum time-locked by the universe. This means that the universe has literally locked his death down at a certain point, presumably so he would stop doing bad shit. Unsurprisingly, once he's unexpectedly revived in
Fate/Grand Order, he starts getting down to doing bad shit almost immediately.
Β« Β« Β« sadomasochistic
- Kirei finds "bad" things desirable.
- This extends from the smallest things to more large-scale events; he isn't picky.
- Essentially, Kirei receives pleasure from watching other people in misery. Yes, even little girls crying.
- When he was younger, he heavily resisted this aspect of himself. Now that he's olderβand has long accepted his baser urgesβhe readily gives into them in his daily life.
- Most of Kirei's interactions with others are dictated, behind the scenes, by his desire to see someone suffer, become sad, get angry, etc. So, he tends to be long-winded and bluntly realistic in his conversations with Shirou and others in
Fate/stay night. He's always looking for a weakness, and then after uncovering it, exploits it mercilessly.
- What's the reward for Kirei? Inciting suffering in others or outright making terrible things happen is the
only way he can feel true happiness and pleasure.
- It's canonically true that the part of the year Kirei enjoys most is New Year's Eve, because he holds a mass at his church that "can ruin both the past year and the coming year [for his congregation] at the same time, in just half a day".
- Kirei's feelings surrounding important people in his life are pretty twisted. Both his wife and his father loved him unconditionally, although only his wife fully understood his sadistic nature. When his wife takes her own life on her deathbed and his father is found murdered, Kirei is overcome with the desire to have been the one who killed them instead. In the case of his wife, where he still struggles to come to terms with his true feelings about her, the fantasy is partially a method of self-punishment.
- Kirei at least tolerates the infliction of pain and suffering on himself. When he was younger, he tried to repent through serious mental and physical penance. Once he concluded there was no hope for him after even his loving and faithful wife couldn't fix him, he decided to commit suicide. Kirei often enjoys receiving harm just because of the joy of seeing (and experiencing) the aggressive and uncomfortable emotions he inspires in others.
- While Kirei isn't a highly sexual person to begin with and his sadomasochism
does not revolve around sex, it definitely isn't out of the question to assume he enjoys inflicting pain upon othersβand receiving pain from themβduring sex. Depending on the person and the circumstances, very violent sex is a possibility, as is lack of proper consideration to consent.
- Because of his inherent defect, Kirei finds most foods and other things unfulfilling. The one food he does enjoy is ridiculously spicy mapo tofu, because the pain of the heat and spice makes him feel
something.
Β« Β« Β« insatiable
- Kirei is never satisfied. His entire life has been one long, constant search for answers. Rather than something forced by circumstance, he actively chooses this path for himself now.
- In his youth, Kirei was obsessed with finding out why he was born so broken and how he could be saved by God. In
Fate/Zero, a major motive for him is asking the Holy Grail to show him what he really is, and what he wishes for and desires.
-
But, after the Grail reveals this by burning a chunk of the city to death, Kirei still isn't done.
- His main motivation in the Holy Grail War of
Heaven's Feel is to have the
answer to his questions
explained. In the
Fate/Zero light novels, he describes it as searching for the problem-solving methods you do to solve an equation. So, he wants the contradiction of himselfβa man given life by God but who is also hella badβexplained.
- Kirei is generally ruthless in accomplishing anything he sets his mind to; he never stops going. He's patient enough to wait years for a payoff and completely willing to brutally attack high school students. He's always plotting, and he incorporates new observations and unexpected developments into his efforts to accomplish his goals.
- Although he does have the personal goal of understanding the reason for his own existence, simply being able to inflict pain and misery on othersβand watch them sufferβis always enough of an impetus to get Kirei to do things. Because that "quantity" is virtually inexhaustible as long as people are alive, this is another reason he's never satisfied.
- Once he discovers his true character, Kirei never tires of being the kind of person he truly is or reaping the pleasures of others' agony. He doesn't have misery burnout.
Powers and Abilities:
The
Abilities section of Kirei's article on the wiki provides a thorough overview of the details of his abilities throughout all of
Fate/.
-
Command Seals. Kirei has multiple Command Seals affixed to his left arm. These are red, symbolic markings meant to bind a Servant to him, force a Servant to obey him, or help a Servant accomplish major feats (like traveling over a long distance in only a second). He can transfer them to other magic users. He can also use the magical energy in the Seals to strengthen his Black Keys or himself.
-
Master. Kirei can serve as a Master, and in
Fate/stay night, he starts off having a contract with two Servants. A Master is just a magic-using participant in the Holy Grail War who's fighting to win the Grail and have his wish granted, while a Servant is a heroic figure from history summoned to help a Master fight. Kirei has the knowledge and skills to direct a variety of Servants and supplement them with magical energy.
-
Magecraft. Kirei was mentored for years by the accomplished head of a magus family. While he was taught many different kinds of magecraft, his true talent is in healing magecraft. Kirei's specific originβhis elementβis "opening wounds"; this can be thought of as spiritually or magically conducted surgery.
-
Executor and member of the Holy Church. Executors are essentially murderers in God's name who seek out and destroy what the Church labels heretical, like rogue magi or undead vampires. He's skilled in handling Black Keys, long-bladed weapons powered by magic. Kirei also has years of battle experience. He reaps the benefits from various protection spells and other secrets afforded to members of the Church. For example, Kirei can use a Baptism Rite to exorcise spirits.
-
Bajiquan. Kirei is an extremely strong and skilled user of a form of Chinese martial arts. He's fast, able to block blows without seeing them, resilient, and capable of crushing an opponent's heart and lungs with a single punch. He's also ripped an entire tree in half
while his hands were tied to the trunk.
-
All the World's Evil. Kirei was revived in
Fate/Zero by being given a replacement heart by the corrupted Holy Grail. Usually, all this means is that he does not have a heartbeat, he looks slightly older than he should be, and he's going to die faster. But because of the nasty corruption that is a part of him, Kirei might be able to control or influence similarly corrupted energy/people/things.
